How to Lay Hardwood Floor in a Contrasting Directionthumbnail

To lay hardwood Floor in a Contrasting Direction, you have to snap a chalk line on the floor 3/8 inch from the edge of the longest wall in the room to give an expansion gap. Besides, snap lines on the floor along the remaining walls in the room as well as in the room where the flooring will lay in the contrasting direction. After that, lay a hardwood plank for the first course on the floor directly above the chalk line with its grooved edge facing the wall. You need to Join the end of this plank with another plank and tap the joint lightly so it forms a tight seam. You must continue this process of laying full-length planks for the first course.

You should cut the last plank to the required size before fitting it in place. Then, Start the second course with the cut plank from the previous course to offset the seams and form staggered flooring. You can lay the plank for the second course into the tongue edge of the previous course. You have to continue to lay hardwood planks for this course as well as the remaining courses in the same manner you laid the first until you cover the flooring with same-direction planks. Next, Measure the floor opening where you will install hardwood planks in the contrasting direction.

How to Frame an Interior Fireplacethumbnail

To Frame an Interior Fireplace, you have to Sketch your framing design on a sheet of graph paper. You need to note the interior fireplace’s relationship to existing walls as well as ceilings. You must note the location of the sole plate and top plate. You should add locations of existing ceiling joists and wall studs as determined with an electronic stud finder, so the outer edges of framing can optimally be nailed into these for good support. After that, incorporate in your design the specifications given in the installation instructions for the fireplace insert including the minimum height, depth as well as width of the insert opening, minimum chimney height or minimum venting space and any allowances on the sides to accommodate gas supply lines.

Then, Mark the length and width of the overall fireplace framing on the ceiling on the ceiling joists if unfinished or on the ceiling drywall with a carpenter’s pencil. You can Drop a plumb bob on a string from the corners of the marks on the ceiling to the floor to replicate the framing dimensions. Next, Cut the top and sole plates from 2-by-4 lumber with a chop saw and lay it on the floor about eight feet apart on their edges. You have to stack two scrap pieces of 2-by-4s on the floor and measure from the top of the stack to the ceiling to arrive at your stud lengths. You need to cut four studs: Two will make the ends of the frame and two will go on either side of the insert opening.

How to Make a Dining Table With Floor Planksthumbnail

To Make a Dining Table with Floor Planks, you have to choose four floor planks that are four to six inches wide. You need to Measure and cut each of the four planks to a length of three feet. You must arrange the four boards into a square three feet by three feet in size and four to six inches tall. You should Drill two evenly spaced screws into each corner to secure the square shape. After that, lay a series of over 5-foot-long boards side-by-side until the total width of the boards measures forty inches across.

You can Measure and cut each of these boards to five feet long. Then, Lay the boards out again side-by-side and this time set them over the square frame built. You have to Note how two of the square frame boards are parallel to the tabletop planks and the other two boards are perpendicular to the top planks. You need to drive nine screws every four inches through the top planks and into each of the perpendicular square frame boards below to hold them in place and complete the tabletop. Next, flip the tabletop unit upside down so it rests on the series of planks.

How to Lead a Chimneythumbnail

To Lead a Chimney, you have to prepare the chimney with removing old flashing and roofing cement with a chisel and Prybar. After that, cut the pre-bent sheet lead base flashing with straight tin snips to fit across the front of the chimney to length and cut a 45-degree angle at one end to accommodate the bend. You should secure the base flashing with roofing nails and put a dot of polyurethane caulk at the corner where the angle begins to keep water from seeping under the flashing. Then, Attach the first piece of step flashing by first cutting a piece of pre-bent 8-inch-square step flashing so that the end bends about 1 1/2 inches around the front corner of the chimney. You can set this end along one side of the chimney so that the front corner overlaps the base flashing and covers the dot of caulk.

You have to secure the flashing with roofing nails. Next, complete the step flashing, omitting the caulk with additional pieces of step flashing until you have covered the entire side of the chimney and place the bottom of the flashing under each course of shingles. You need to overlap each piece of step flashing on the one below it, diverting water onto the shingles and away from the chimney. You must repeat the process for the other side. Forth, Place the cricket at the uphill side of the chimney and overlap the last pieces of step flashing. You should Shingle over the part of the saddle that rests on the roof and cut the shingles along the join.

How to Build a Roof Overhang Over an Exterior Doorthumbnail

To Build a Roof Overhang over an Exterior Door, you have to Measure the width of the door frame using a tape measure and add two feet to this number to find the width of the roof you will build. You need to cut three pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber to this length with using a circular saw. You must cut two more pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber twelve inches long. After that, draw a 1-by-1-inch square on the ends of the 2-inch wide faces of two roof width pieces and both 18-inch-long pieces with using a pencil and ruler. You can cut these squares out using a jigsaw to leave 1-by-1-by-4 inch notches in the lumbers.

You have to Screw the notched lumbers together to form a rectangle with using a hammer drill and screwdriver drill bit to seat two countersunk six inch screws per corner joint. Then, Lift the remaining roof width lumber onto the wall twelve inches above the door frame and center lumber over the door so that there is one foot of wood on each side of the frame. You need to Drill holes through the lumber and into the wall every six inches along the length of the lumber. You must fit a wall plug into each hole in the wall. You should Screw the lumber to the wall using 6-inch-long screws.

How to Install Window Flashing to Brick Veneerthumbnail

To Install Window Flashing to Brick Veneer, you have to Pound along the mortar seam with a chisel and hammer to break away the row of brick veneer along the top edge of the window. You need to remove excess mortar off the wall with using the chisel so that the installation surface is smooth. After that, Spread a 1/2-inch layer of mortar over the window with a trowel and attach a section of steel lintel over the window so it extends at least four inches past the side edges of the window. You must Place a level on the lintel edge to verify it is horizontally level. Then, Hold a section of metal flashing over the top of the lintel so the protruding portion of the flashing is flush with the bottom of the lintel.

You should Use a level to make sure it is horizontally straight. You can Drill pilot holes with a carbide drill bit. Next, screw the metal flashing in place with masonry screws. Forth, spread about one inch of mortar over the flashing edge screwed to the wall with using a trowel. You have to Press the brick veneer into the mortar so that the spacing is the same as the other brick veneer on the wall.

How to Install the Trim for a Steel Roofthumbnail

To Install the Trim for a Steel Roof, you have to attach the drip edge trim recommended by the roofing manufacturer along the gutter line edge of the roof with screws and neoprene washers. You need to make sure that any underlying roofing materials are covered so that the new edge allows rainwater to drip directly into the gutter. After that, you can lay in flashing for roof valleys where two roof surfaces meet and secure the piece on both sides with screws as well as neoprene washers as recommended in the manufacturer’s instruction manual. You must apply Butyl sealer tape to the edges. Then, Install 4-by-6 inch rake trim along the gables of the house.

You should insert screws at regular intervals at the top and sides spaced 24 inches apart. Next, attach the ridge cap to the peak of the roof line based on the manufacturer’s directions. Forth, Cut the ends of the ridge cap and turn down the edges with a pair of pliers after installation. Last, you have to install transition trim at points where vertical wall surfaces meet the roof surface. You can secure the trim with using screws and neoprene washers.
